The American Express credit card refer-a-friend program rewards you for every person that applies for a credit card using your link and is approved.
In the past, you were limited to referring people to the Amex cards you already have in your wallet. But since recently, you can refer new cardmembers to any Amex card if you hold a non-co-branded Amex card.
Below, we’ll go over everything you need to know about this lucrative referral program: what cards you can refer, how much you can make and other tips and tricks.
What Cards Can I Refer?
The Amex cards that qualify for referral bonuses depend on the Amex cards you have in your wallet.
IF YOU HAVE… | YOU CAN REFER… |
A regular Amex card | Any Amex credit card |
A cobranded card | That suite of cards |
For example, if you hold a Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express, you can refer any Amex card and earn the bonus. But if you hold a Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant™ American Express® Card, you can only refer cards that earn Marriott Bonvoy points.
How Many Points Can I Earn?
It depends on the personal or business credit card you refer. The list is subject to change. See the list below for examples of past offers.

Amex Refer-A-Friend Tips & Tricks
Spousal referral. Referring your partner is within Amex Refer-A-Friend rules.
No spamming. Amex really doesn’t like it if you spam. Officially, you can only send referrals to close family and friends who have agreed to receive your referral. Avoid posting your offer on paid advertising or public forums.
Points cap. As mentioned in the above section, there are limits to how many referral bonuses you can earn per year, which varies from card to card.
Card must be approved. You’ll only earn your bonus if your referral is approved for the card. Simply applying for one does not guarantee a bonus.
Pay your balance on time. Failure to do so will result in Amex refusing to pay out your referral bonus.
Bottom Line
With these tips and tricks in mind, you can participate in the American Express credit card refer-a-friend program and take your reward earnings to the next level. But remember, the bonus you earn is subject to card approval.
Because offers are only available for a limited time, make sure you check for updates and follow the steps to find the perfect offer for you and your referral.
