How to find and tame bears in Once Human

If you’ve always wanted an animal companion to watch your back, you can do just that in Once Human. Bears are among the few animals you can find and tame, but doing so is not easy. There are a few steps you need to take before getting one.

Not only do you need to track a bear down, but you’ll need to tame it for the bear to become an animal companion. As you might imagine based on any wild animal, there are a few talents you need to unlock to make this happen. Here’s what you need to know about bear locations and how to tame a bear when you find it in Once Human.

The first task you need to overcome is tracking down bears. They’re going to be well out of your way if you’re focusing on the main storyline in Once Human, and they won’t be available immediately. I’ve reliably found them while exploring the Chalk Peak area, a level 30 region. You can access this area much sooner than level 30, but you need to work through the main story before entering here. You might also be looking for Special Parts while exploring this area.

When you can begin exploring the Chalk Peaks, head to the northwest section of the map, beyond the Monolight of Thirst, alongside the coastline. Make your way past the Alpha Institute; I regularly find bears throughout this region. They’re usually around level 35, and they’re formidable enemies. You might not want to fight them using melee weapons but instead focus on using ranged attacks. They’re dangerous creatures to fight up close in Once Human.

Now that you know where to look, the next step is taming the bear. You need to unlock a particular Memetic skill using your Ciphers, and you can find it underneath the Logistics tree. It’ll be on the right side of the tree called Animal Capture and Animal Taming. You need to unlock both, and each costs seven Cipher points and 2,000 Energy Links. After you have them both, you can craft the Throwable Tranquilizer Dart. When battling against a tameable creature, a small line in their health bar indicates how low they need to get before you can attempt to tame them. Make sure to have a tranquilizer on your character when battling a bear, and then use the dart after you damage them enough beyond the threshold.

After catching a tamable bear, the last thing to do is to craft a Whistle, which you would have unlocked from the Animal Capture tree in Once Human. You can use this whistle to summon your captured companion and have them aid you in combat.
