Summoners plead for changes to LoL’s 3-split ranked system—and Riot is already cooking

Over the year, League of Legends players have had to get used to the consistent grind due to the latest Riot has made to ranked play. It is a great incentive to bring players back, but some have raised some complaints that have been quickly acknowledged by the developers.

On the League subreddit, ranked players explained that having such a short time to climb leaves very little room to progress on their own in-game goals, especially for those too busy with working life, other hobbies, and maintaining connections with friends and family in real life. Life can be unpredictable and hectic, and this new ranked reset system doesn’t give any favors.

“Four months feels way too short to make meaningful ranked progress, especially since you get reset an entire tier with each new split,” one user said on the League subreddit. “It feels like I’m spending 90 percent of the split crawling through low Diamond, and once I get back to my previous rank, I’m so mentally exhausted I don’t even want to play the last two weeks I have remaining.”

Luckily, the League developers have already considered possible adjustments to the system. Riot’s senior design lead Jordan “BarackProbama” Checkman responded to the massive thread, saying that the team is “discussing changes to the current reset structure” as they speak, which is a great sign for the player base moving forward.

Constant change can breed a ton of burnout when it comes to the player base, but it does seem like many players agree on the undesirable state of the three-split year. One compromise that could satisfy both parties is one less ranked reset during the year so that players are still given incentives to play throughout the year but aren’t discouraged by constant resets.

You should keep your eyes peeled for more information once the devs finalize their plans for 2025 and beyond.
