A long-forgotten but very fun CoD Zombies mode could be returning in Black Ops 6

Call of Duty Zombies fans are chomping at the bit of flesh to get their hands on Black Ops 6’s iteration of the hugely popular spin-off mode—and the excitement may become even more palpable soon.

The latest rumor about Treyarch’s next romp into undead slaying suggests that a long-lost alternate mode for Zombies could be making its return in BO6, ending a wait for some that has been almost 12 years in the making.

All the way back in Black Ops 2, Treyarch deployed a variant of Zombies called Grief. Many may have forgotten the mode or never got to play it, so the possible return is something to keep an eye on.

Grief, as the mode suggests, allows players to grief others. The mode featured two teams of four facing off in a competition of zombie killing, allowing the different squads to troll each other by doing things like blocking off doorways or using them as bait for zombies.

A power-up would drop periodically that would allow players to throw flesh at the enemy players, which would make the zombies all target them, reminiscent of a Bile Bomb from Left 4 Dead, and the ultimate way of screwing over the opposition.

The win condition was having the entire other team get downed and surviving the round’s end. But if both teams all got downed before all zombies were killed in the round, all players would be revived and the game would continue.

It’s easy to see how this mode would be addictive, especially now in 2024 with trolling at an all-time high. With some quality-of-life tweaks and perhaps some twists to the mode, it could be another amazing addition to BO6. But for now, it’s just a rumor.

Black Ops 6 launches on Oct. 25.
