Riot Games originally intended to release League of Legends with just 20 unique champions but eventually doubled that number leading up to launch day on Oct. 27, 2009. Now, 15 years later, there are 168.
Aurora is the newest member of the League family, arriving in mid-2024. Before her, playful little dragon Smolder (who brought his mom to the Rift too) went live in Patch 14.3 and has been scorching the bot lane since.
He was preceded by Hwei the Visionary (champ 166) and Briar the Restrained Hunger (165), released in December and September 2023, respectively. Hwei stood out among the epic pile of League characters because he can cast as many as 10 different spells, while Briar shook the status quo by taking over the jungle metagame.
When I first played League in season one, I never imagined the champion roster would reach 100, let alone 168. (I was a Poppy one-trick pony, by the way.) This just goes to show the longevity of the game throughout the years. Despite its ups and downs, it’s still going strong over a decade later, bringing in millions of players every month.
