Bungie developers have spoken out about last week’s most recent round of layoffs, which resulted in over 200 employees being let go from the Destiny 2 maker.
It’s been a rocky year for the studio, which was also hit with layoffs in October 2023 before a massive shake-up was revealed last week, resulting in a 17 percent reduction via layoffs and even more team members moved around in restructuring efforts.
Now, over a week after the layoffs were made official, the team still working on Destiny and not moved to other projects like Marathon posted on Twitter/X about what the future holds for the franchise.
“We know that recent changes at Bungie have created uncertainty surrounding the future of Destiny,” the team said on its dev account. “Rest assured we remain committed to Destiny, to supporting our community with transparency, and to delivering regular updates about the game.”
A day after news of the layoffs broke, a Bloomberg report detailed the tumult behind the scenes, revealing that a spin-off, third-person game set in the Destiny universe was recently canceled, and Destiny 3 has not yet been in production at all. Rumors had begun to swirl that the third Destiny game had been canceled, but it was the third-person project instead.
The report also said, however, that Bungie will be moving away from the yearly release DLC model that the franchise has been using for several years, opting instead for smaller, free content releases.
“We’ll be talking with you all about the future of Destiny and plans for our next multi-year journey soon,” Bungie said. “Once we plant a flag for the date, we’ll let you all know. Thank you for your patience, and we’ll see you again soon.”
Whatever’s next for Destiny, there are still a large amount of fans the world over excited to learn about and play it.
