The Beast in the Ice is one of the endgame bosses you can tackle in Diablo 4. This boss is no pushover, but it’s rare loot drops and reward materials make it crucial to beat for other endgame content, so roll those sleeves up.
Here’s how to find, summon, and beat the Beast in the Ice in Diablo 4.
Where to find the Beast in the Ice
The Beast in the Ice is located inside the level 85 Glacial Fissure dungeon in the Fractured Peaks region of Sanctuary. Previously, you had to craft a sigil to access this dungeon. This was removed in Patch 1.5.0 though, so now as long as you’re playing in World Tier Four you can enter this dungeon without having to craft the Glacial Fissure Sigil.
How to summon the Beast in the Ice
There are two ways to summon the Beast in the Ice: The normal method (which will get you a level 85 Beast in the Ice for the boss battle) and then the tormented method (which earns you a level 200 Beast in the Ice).
To summon the normal Beast in the Ice (the level 85 one), offer nine Distilled Fear at the altar within the dungeon. You can get this by participating in World Tier Four endgame content like Helltides, World Bosses, or Nightmare Dungeons (Tier 30 or higher).
To summon the Tormented Beast in the Ice (the upgraded level 200 one), you must offer the following materials at the altar:
- 27 Distilled Fear.
- One Stygian Stone: You have a chance of getting this from high-tier Pit runs (typically over Tier 60), World Bosses, and Seasonal Caches.
Once you have the necessary materials and are at the altar, you can summon whichever version of the Beast in the Ice you’d like to defeat in this Diablo 4 dungeon battle.
How to defeat the Beast in the Ice
In addition to the Beast in the Ice’s basic melee attacks (which you can usually avoid by standing behind him) he has four core mechanics you’re going to need to watch out for: Ice Breath, Ice Shards, Airborn Swipe, and Ice Star.
Ice Breath
For his Ice Breath, the Beast roars a stream of cold breath in front of himself and rotates to follow after you. When you see this, stand behind him or move out of range of the breath. He also summons multiple Ice Shards that race across the map. You can avoid these by dodging out of the way or moving in between the gaps.
Aerial Swipe
Aerial Swipe is one of the most annoying mechanics in this battle; the Beast flies into the air, fills the edges of the map with a rotating wind, and swipes four lines vertically or horizontally. This can send you into the rotating wind.
To survive this mechanic, stand in the center. As soon as you see the swipe-free lane, stand in it. He’ll summon mobs, so lure them to the safe zone and take care of them there. Otherwise, you’ll be sent into the winds. When the swipes disappear, return to the center, wait for the next round of swipes, and find the safe zone once again. Continue repeating this process until he drops to the ground and can take damage once again.
Ice Star
During the Ice Star mechanic, he’ll send out five thick lines of ice that burst with ice shards. To avoid being slowed by these, stand in the safe spaces. Although the center appears safe, it’ll also burst with ice shards so this isn’t a safe zone. Once the ice shards burst, the Beast will summon another Ice Star with a line appearing in your direction. Move quickly to the next safe zone, avoid the attacks, and repeat this until this mechanic stops.
As you’re avoiding these mechanics, you can freely deal damage. If you need to use your health potions, don’t worry, as he drops potions when his health is at 75, 50, and 25 percent. In terms of elixirs, the best one to consume before summoning the Beast is the Elixir of Cold Resistance, which will help reduce some of the incoming cold damage. So, if you’re not good at avoiding mechanics or if your class is on the slow side, this elixir can really help.
So, as long as you avoid his mechanics and safely deal damage in between his attacks, you can defeat the Beast in the Ice relatively quickly.
All rewards for defeating the Beast in the Ice
Once you’ve defeated the Beast in the Ice, you can obtain epic loot and a Pincushioned Doll, which is one of the items used to summon Andariel. Some of the best items you have a chance of getting from the Beast in the Ice include:
- Fists of Fate (all classes)
- Mutilator Plate (Necromancer)
- Paingorger’s Gauntlets (all classes)
If you’re looking for a specific item, here’s the full list of all Boss drops you can get from the Beast in the Ice (and the other endgame Bosses) to help you on that item hunt.
If you’re after a specific item drop or need a Pincushioned Doll, this is everything you need to know about where to find, how to summon, and how to defeat the Beast in the Ice in Diablo 4. Best of all, once you defeat the Beast in the Ice, you can now use the altar to resummon him (if you have the materials) without leaving the dungeon.
