Ghost of Tsushima sequel finally revealed, but it’s not really a sequel at all

The long-awaited Ghost of Tsushima sequel was finally revealed at PlayStation’s State of Play today, but those hoping for more Jin Sakai adventures will be disappointed.

In fact, it looks like the game will have little to do with the original at all. Ghost of Yōtei was revealed to take place in the year 1603, which is several hundred years after the events of Tsushima. And this game features a new female protagonist.

“In 1603, a new Ghost named Atsu sets out on a journey in the lands surrounding Mount Yōtei, an area filled with sprawling grasslands, snowy tundras, and unexpected dangers,” the trailer’s YouTube description says.

The short teaser also confirmed the game is currently slated to release in 2025, which may come as a surprise to many, given how late it has been revealed. But at least the wait doesn’t appear to be much longer.

“We also wanted to continue to innovate. To create something fresh but familiar, we looked beyond Jin Sakai’s story and the island of Tsushima, and shifted our focus to the idea of the Ghost instead,” Sucker Punch communications manager Andrew Goldfarb said on the PlayStation Blog. “At Sucker Punch we love origin stories, and we wanted to explore what it could mean to have a new hero wearing a Ghost mask, and uncovering a new legend. This led us to Ghost of Yōtei: a new protagonist, a new story to unfold, and a new region of Japan to explore.”

The Ghost of Yōtei reveal was saved for last for this month’s State of Play, meaning Sony has high hopes for it. It’s been known that a sequel to Tsushima was in the works for a long time, considering the original launched in 2020. It will have been at least five years in development when Ghost of Yōtei launches.

Fans of Tsushima may initially feel disappointed that the new title has little or no connection to the original game, but for now, the trailer will have to be enough to excite players for Sucker Punch’s next adventure.
