Gothic Remake is a faithful recreation of the 2001 RPG that promises plenty to enjoy for new and returning players alike.
The release of Gothic over two decades ago sparked the start of a new franchise that received several sequels and successors, but there hasn’t been a new entry since 2006’s Gothic 3. While that isn’t changing, the THQ Nordic Showcase on Aug. 2 detailed how the franchise is returning to its roots in the remake.
Announced four years ago, Gothic Remake is edging closer and closer to release. While we still don’t have a release window, fans got an exciting look at Gothic Remake at the THQ Nordic Showcase today.
The footage showed off Gothic Remake’s combat and environments, and also gave a sneak peek at some new additions that weren’t in the first game, like rock climbing—and there’s sure to be more surprises in store.
Key pillars of Gothic Remake are its NPCs and wildlife, all of which have routines they follow each day. Regardless of whether you interact with them, this mechanic is present throughout the game to create an immersive world that lives and breathes no matter what you’re doing.
The game also has an in-depth combat system that developer Alkimia Interactive says grows depending on your rank in a particular skill set. The controls have been modernized from the original title, but Gothic Remake is still described as “tactical and rather slow-paced,” with progression playing a critical role.
Other key mechanics have also been enhanced, including swimming and diving, and climbing is a new skill. In the open world, there are new areas to explore and secrets to discover, offering plenty to get stuck into.
No release window has been shared for Gothic Remake, but the title will be available on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
