Overwatch 2 had a rocky launch in October 2022, but that didn’t stop old and new players from popping in to see what the big deal was when it transitioned into free-to-play.
Blizzard released information on upcoming updates, season 15, and other changes via the Spotlight showcase on Feb. 12. If you’ve seen the chatter, you might be wondering what the game’s current player count is. So, how many players does Overwatch 2 have?
Overwatch 2 player count, explained
Blizzard has always remained tight-lipped about the exact number of players in its games, but thanks to live trackers and platforms such as Steam, we can make a rough player count estimate. Considering the healthy competition coming in hot from Marvel Rivals, it’s always worth questioning where Overwatch 2 stands after all these years, and it’s never been more important than now.
As of February, the current player count numbers aren’t looking as strong. We’ve utilized the Live Player Counter via activeplayer.io to get the average player count from the last 30 days, across all platforms:
Month | Average monthly players | Monthly gain / loss | Monthly gain / loss percentage | Average daily players |
Last 30 days | 21,513,199 | +231,965 | One percent | 5,808,564 |
Just to compare, Blizzard’s Activision Q3 earnings report revealed Overwatch 2 had over 35 million players during its first month. The game also reportedly doubled the average daily player count of Overwatch during the former’s first month.
In more recent months, October through November 2024 were the busiest periods for Overwatch 2 since its launch. Across October 2024, season 13’s Spellbinding and annual Halloween events understandably kept player engagement up. November was an even bigger deal with Classic mode appearing as a limited three-week event. Ranging from an average player count of 22 to 24 million between those two months, Jan. 2025 saw a slight dip to 21 million.
Although we cannot confirm the player count on console, Steam shows 26,972 in-game players at the time of writing.. But this is only a percentage of Overwatch 2’s current playerbase. To compare, Marvel Rivals is at 247,997 on Steam alone.
From as far back as we can go on the history of active player’s live player count, Overwatch 2 has raked in greater numbers annually for every first quarter since its release in October 2022.
These include:
Month | Average monthly players | Monthly gain / loss | Monthly gain / loss percentage | Average daily players |
January 2024 | 26,040,837 | 1,879,734 | Eight percent | 5,989,392 |
February 2023 | 26,023,554 | 2,414,704 | 10 percent | 3,346,408 |
Now that season 15 is underway, it’s looking like an uphill battle for Blizzard. At the time of writing this, Overwatch 2 is sitting on 22,495 in-game players on Steam. That’s a far cry from its all-time peak of 75,608 in-game players, but its beefy season 15 update just dropped. Here’s hoping the tides change in Overwatch 2‘s favor.
