GreedFall 2 is now out in early access, giving players a taste of what’s to come with the game’s exploration and combat systems. There are a few mechanics, like the keybindings and hotbar systems, that are similar to the first game but look remarkably different.
The hotbar’s the display at the bottom of the screen that lets you quickly use attacks in the heat of combat. Your starting skills are automatically equipped to this toolbar and have bindings assigned to them, but when you level up and unlock new abilities, they won’t automatically appear there. Instead, you need to assign them to a hotbar slot. GreedFall 2 doesn’t tell you exactly how to do this, and it approaches the skill system differently than the first game, so it took me quite some time to figure out how to assign skills to keybindings.
Here’s how to bind skills and attacks to GreedFall 2‘s hotbar.
GreedFall 2: How to assign keybindings to abilities or items
Unlike the first GreedFall, players will have full control over their companions in combat in addition to their own custom-made character. This means you’ll also be able select each of your companions’ skills and bind them to their own separate hotbars.
But while you’re in the skill-selection screen, you’ll notice you won’t be able to assign an ability to a specific keybinding after you’ve unlocked it. To assign a spell or skill to the hotbar in GreedFall 2, you’ll need to select an unassigned keybinding and then choose the ability you’d like to assign there. To do so, follow these steps:
- Open up your tactical camera with RB on controller or the space bar on PC.
- Select an open slot on the hotbar by hovering over it with your mouse if you’re on PC. If you’re using a controller, click the left analog stick button (LS), then use the left analog stick to navigate to an open slot.
- Hit the appropriate button to assign an ability (Q on PC or X on controller).
- Select the ability or item you want to bind to the hotkey.
The skill will now be equipped to the hotbar in whichever keybinding slot you’ve assigned. If you’d like to rebind the skill, follow the steps above to select the slot you’d like to replace, then choose Rebind. This will once again open your list of skills, allowing you to swap between skills.
Unfortunately for those looking to remove skills from the hotbar entirely, there’s no simple way to rid a slot of its assigned skill. Instead, you’ll need to replace the skill with another ability in a different slot—one that you want to keep equipped in the hotbar. This will remove the first skill from the keybinding, moving the second skill to its place. Then, navigate back to the slot the second skill was first located and rebind the skill to its original spot.
GreedFall 2′s developer Spiders will eventually add more abilities as it progresses through its early-access period. There will also be two more companions, a new crafting system, region, and skill tree, and more, according to the GreedFall 2 roadmap that was released on Sept. 19.
Since the game’s still in early access, we can expect many of the combat systems and other mechanics to change throughout the development process. We will update this article if, or when, the hotbar/keybinding process changes.
