How to fix Dev Error 5820 in Black Ops 6

Copping an error code mid-way through a multiplayer match in Call of Duty is never fun, especially when you’re on a massive streak. Sometimes it’s something you can fix, but others pop up out of nowhere and there’s nothing you can do.

Dev Error 5820, for the most part, won’t just be happening to you as it’s a problem associated with the CoD servers as a whole. That said, there might actually be a way for you to fix it if you find it happening constantly.

Here’s everything we know about Dev Error 5820 in Black Ops 6.

Dev Error 5820 is a common one in CoD titles, with many players also reporting the issue in Modern Warfare 3. It occurs when there’s something blocking communication between the official Activision servers and your console or PC. A few players encountered the issue midway through the Black Ops 6 beta in Sept. 2024.

In most cases, the issue is server-sided, meaning there is a problem on Activision’s end and you likely aren’t the only one encountering the error code. As such, you should first check to see whether there is an outage on CoD‘s end before proceeding. If servers are down, you’re out of luck and will just need to wait for a fix.

However, if there don’t seem to be any problems with official Black Ops 6 servers, then we’ve got a few fixes for you to try before you throw in the towel.

Fixes for Dev Error 5820 in Black Ops 6

You should be checking the official CoD server status first to confirm it’s something on your end. Activision’s support page and the official CoD Updates account on X/Twitter will provide you with the most up-to-date information regarding server outages.

If you’ve ruled out server problems and you’re sure the problem is on your end, here’s what you can do to fix Dev Error 5820 in Black Ops 6:

  • Restart your game. This probably means relaunching CoD through the CoD HQ browser so you’ll be in for a wait, but if this is the first you’ve seen of the error, a game restart should be done to rule out repeated instances.
  • Limit On-Demand Texture Streaming. Some players reported this graphics setting has been causing issues with Dev Error 5820. Head to the Graphics settings, then set On-Demand Texture Streaming to Minimal.
  • Restart your internet connection via your modem. Close Black Ops 6, then switch off your modem at the power. Wait 30 seconds, then turn the modem back on and wait a few minutes until your internet connection is restored. Open Blops 6 again and see if the error is still occurring.
  • Verify your game’s files to see if you’re missing a key networking file. To do this on PC:
    • Steam: In your Library, head to Call of Duty, hit Properties, then under Local Files select Verify integrity of game cache.
    • Battle.net: Next to Call of Duty in the games menu, select the cogwheel, then Scan and Repair.
  • Uninstall and reinstall Blops 6 entirely. An annoying prospect, but it’s possible there’s a corrupt file that an integrity check isn’t picking up.
