Disney Dreamlight Valley loves a good scavenger hunt, and one of the toughest ones you can tackle involves hunting down some mysterious Matryoshka Dolls scattered around the valley. But where are they, and how do you use them to unlock a new villager?
These small dolls are some of the toughest items to find around the village. They’re crucial for unlocking a key villager though, so here’s how to get and use the Matryoshka Dolls in Disney Dreamlight Valley.
What are the Matryoshka Dolls in Disney Dreamlight Valley?
The Matryoshka Dolls are four different dolls you can find around Dreamlight Valley to unlock Jack Skellington. As soon as you find and pick up the first doll, this triggers the start of the quest, Something Comes A’Knocking, which is a friendship quest with Merlin.
During this quest, you are tasked with finding all the Matryoshka Dolls and placing them into a special Holiday-Tree Portal in the Forgotten Lands to unlock Jack Skellington. However, finding these Matryoshka Dolls in Dreamlight Valley is a challenging task and is just the first thing you must do to get Jack Skellingon’s level 10 reward.
To unlock and start the Something Comes A’Knocking quest, you first need to complete the Fairy Godmother’s quest, Miracles Take Time. Once you’ve completed this quest, the special tree and dolls will spawn in Dreamlight Valley.
How to get the Matryoshka Dolls in Disney Dreamlight Valley
To get the Matryoshka Dolls in Dreamlight Valley, you’ll need to wander around the valley and pick them up as you find them. They can appear in any Dreamlight Valley biome, so you’ll need to check all of them, which include:
- The Plaza
- The Peaceful Meadow
- Dazzle Beach
- The Glade of Trust
- The Forest of Valor
- Frosted Heights
- The Forgotten Lands
- The Sunlit Plateau
Thankfully, the Matryoshka Dolls can only spawn in open areas, meaning you won’t find them inside houses, caves, or other instances. And they don’t spawn on the Eternity Isle or the Vale, which are the areas that unlock after purchasing the A Rift in Time and The Storybook Vale expansions.
All Matryoshka Dolls locations in Disney Dreamlight Valley
All four of the Matryoshka Dolls spawn in different random locations for each player. But the first doll appears in the Plaza for everyone, so this is the best spot to start your search.
For me, the first doll was almost at the center of the Plaza, sitting on the ground. It’s small and fairly grey which means it blended in with the path I have placed there quite well, but luckily the golden sparkles around it make it a bit easier to spot.
The rest of the dolls can be anywhere in the valley, so you can choose any other biome to venture to next. The next doll I found was in the Sunlit Plateau biome. This Matryoshka Doll was sitting in the southern region of this area near the ramp that leads up to the Forgotten Lands biome.
My next Matryoshka Doll was hidden behind some furnishings I had placed in the Frosted Heights biome. This doll was sitting to the left of the talking portal you may have previously visited to unlock Olaf.
The fourth and final doll sat in the northwest corner of the Forest of Valor biome. This one was close to the ramp leading up to the Frosted Heights biome and was a bit hard to find among the decently tall grass in this region.
These dolls are small and can blend into the environment very well. Make sure you keep your eyes peeled and look for the sparkles!
How to use the Matryoshka Dolls in Disney Dreamlight Valley
Once you have obtained all four Matryoshka Dolls, you can use them to unlock Jack Skellington. To use the Matryoshka Dolls, you need to:
- Head to the Forgotten Lands biome. This is the shadowy, dark purple biome near the top left corner of Dreamlight Valley.
- Look for the Holiday-Tree Portal, which is a tall, thin tree with a pumpkin carved into the bottom region of the trunk. You can visit this tree during the hunt to drop off the dolls as you find them or wait until you’ve collected them all. The Forgotten Lands is quite dark which means it can be hard to see this tree, especially if the pumpkin carving is facing away from you. The best way to locate this tree if you’re having trouble spotting it is by opening the furniture tab and scouring the entire biome with the overhead perspective it offers.
- Interact with the Holiday-Tree Portal to open your inventory and a slot in the tree.
- Place each of the Matryoshka Dolls into the slot.
- The pumpkin on the tree will become more orange as you add each Matryoshka Doll and candy will appear around the bottom of it.
You can place dolls inside the tree in any order, adding the smallest, then the largest, and the two in the middle. It doesn’t matter as long as you add all four of them.
As soon as all four dolls have been placed inside the tree, a short cutscene will play, and Jack Skellington will arrive in your valley.
How to complete Something Comes A’Knocking in Disney Dreamlight Valley
To complete the Something Comes A’Knocking quest, you need to find and place all four Matryoshka Dolls then officially help Jack Skellington get set up in the valley. Once you’ve put all the dolls where they belong, you can finish the rest of this quest by:
- Talking to Jack, who asks you to find him a home.
- Placing his home somewhere in Dreamlight Valley.
- Using the Scrooge McDuck sign in front of the outline of his house to pay for Jack’s house to be built.
- Paying 5,000 Star Coins to construct Jack’s house.
- Talking to Jack once more to complete the quest.
Jack Skellington is a crucial character to unlock if you want to gain access to everything the valley has to offer. Recruiting him is also essential if you’re hoping to add Sally from The Nightmare Before Christmas. With both characters unlocked you can also witness their special reunion in the Uncanny Romance quest.
