How to talk to Crabbert in Enotria The Last Song

Enotria: The Last Song is home to many interesting creatures, but none are as innocent as Crabbert.

You’ll find Crabbert early into your journey in Falesia Magna, but he won’t want to talk to you at first. When you try to speak to him, the game will give you a short dialogue: “The sand shifts, but nothing happens.” If you want to get Crabbert to show himself, you’ll have to meet a specific requirement.

Here’s how to talk to Crabbert and complete his quest in Enotria: The Last Song.

How to complete Crabbert’s quest, Wheel of Fortune

When you come across Crabbert for the first time on your way to Necropolis, you’ll find a red, glowing item, a note called Crabventure, next to his location. This note describes how a Spaventan soldier conducted experiments on the local wildlife in an attempt to weaponize the fauna against their enemies. After picking this item up, you’ll automatically receive the “Wheel of Fortune” quest entry.

Crabbert hides in the sand when you first meet him, and you’ll only know he’s there from your ability to interact with the environment and the short dialogue box the game gives you. I tried everything to get Crabbert to speak to me: equipping and using Valuable Shells, slamming the ground with melee attacks and Mask Lines, and firing off Ardore Bursts—but it was all to no avail. If you want to get him to pop out of the sand and greet you, you need to appeal to his background, and the clue is in the note.

That’s right: To speak to Crabbert, you need to equip the Spaventa Army Mask, one of the many Masks in Enotria, and interact with the patch of sand one more time. Before you can equip the Spaventa Army Mask, though, you need to farm 300 of its Mask Shards by killing Spaventa soldiers found in the region. Once you’ve done so, visit the nearest checkpoint, the Necropolis knot, and swap out one of your currently equipped Masks for the Spaventa Army one.

If you speak to Crabbert again, he’ll jump out of the sand to say hello, mistaking you for his “papa.” He’ll quickly realize you are, in fact, not his papa—but that won’t stop him from wanting to be your friend. If you agree to his request, he’ll tell you he’ll join you in your shelter.

Travel back to the Theater of the Masks and head in the opposite direction of the stage on the ground floor. This will take you to a sand-filled room that resembles the shores of Falesia Magna, and Crabbert will be hanging out in the corner of the room. If you speak to him, he’ll rejoice at your presence, write you a poem, and ask for fish—which, as far as we’ve found in our playthrough so far, isn’t something you can actually give him. Sorry, Crabbert.
