‘I can’t get out’: Olympic bronze medalist jokes about his low (and perfect) LoL rank

It’s common to see professional athletes enjoying video games in their spare time, and it turns out a 2024 Paris Olympics bronze medalist is also Bronze rank in League of Legends.

On Aug. 1, Spanish athlete Pau Echaniz competed in the slalom canoeing K-1 final at the Paris Olympics. With a time of 88.87 seconds, he earned the bronze medal, trailing Titouan Castryck and Giovanni De Gennaro from France and Italy. A few days later, on Aug. 5, Echaniz shared on X that he’s also a League player with a rank matching the medal he earned in Paris.

In his post, Echaniz made a hilarious statement. “Not getting on a canoe until I get gold,” he wrote, according to Google Translator. Well, we hope he manages to escape Bronze rank soon. Perhaps if Echaniz reaches new heights in League, he can secure a gold medal at the Olympics? We certainly hope so.

The Spanish athlete was also interviewed by different media outlets after his Olympic victory. In one interview, he admitted to being stuck at Bronze rank. “I’m Bronze in LoL and bronze in the Olympic Games. I’m stuck, I can’t get out of it,” Echaniz said in an interview with Gerard Romero (via MARCA).

The 2024 Summer Olympics aren’t done yet, with canoe sprinting beginning today, Aug. 6. According to the official Olympics website, Echaniz isn’t competing in these games, so he should have plenty of time to improve his League ranking and prepare for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
