‘It just feels off’ – Rust player shares idea on how to improve game’s exploration

Rust’s dedicated players love what the multiplayer survival crafting game has to offer, but a recent suggestion from the community could make it even more fun than usual.

In a Sept. 3 Reddit thread, one player opined that they disliked “how there is next to no incentive to explore/roam,” and came up with an interesting proposal on how to fix the issue. It sparked a pretty fun discussion, and Facepunch Studios may want to keep an eye out for it.

“There should be some incentives to explore and adventure about, such as loot boxes having slightly different loot tables depending on monuments/areas,” Redditor ford_crown_victoria said. “For an example, Power Plant could have plus-25 percent more electrical components in boxes than other areas. Train Yard could have plus-25 percent building items. Junkyard could have plus-25 percent weapon items, but plus-10 percent comps or something.”

It’s a solid idea for sure, and the other Rust players in the thread agreed, like one player who said “usually I feel like reddit ideas for Rust are WAY out of touch with reality but this one’s actually good.” Others also pitched that the map itself could use some work, to the chagrin of some veterans.

“The map in its entirely should not be revealed to the player straight away,” one player said. “The map hidden under a black overlay which gets revealed as you explore would be a better option, plus getting rid of those ridiculous live event icons and world event alerts would be good too.”

“Guess what,” another replied. “Map used to work this way.” In the past, the game used a paper map that, once dropped, meant the player lost all access to whatever they had already uncovered.

Map issues aside, incentivizing exploration and journeying outside of your main base area certainly could shake things up and make Rust more interesting.
