“EMAIL” is what the NYT Mini Crossword is looking for when it comes to seven across.
Sending and receiving emails is an everyday form of virtual communication—because it’s electronic. Plus, if you’re in a constant back-and-forth exchange of emails with users sending too many (because of one and two-word answers, for example) you might want to get out of the chain.

NYT Mini Crossword Aug. 14 difficulty rating, explained
I found “EMAIL” to be a tricky answer as I don’t find myself in too many cumbersome and troublesome email chains daily, plus, I would describe it more of a “thread” than a “chain,” personally. Regardless, it’s one of several tricky five-word answers today’s NYT Mini is looking for, and I did struggle, hence why I’m opting for a full five out of five for difficulty.
