Five years after introducing us to Battle Queens, the Grand Coronation, and an interesting alternate League of Legends universe that uses constant battle to power its magic, Riot Games is finally taking us back with more skins.
The four League champions joining the famed Battle Queens universe are Gwen, Fiora, Miss Fortune, and Annie; the latter will be a “Battle Princess” instead.
These skins are expected to cost 1,350 RP (roughly $11 after buying Riot Points). Most of the new skins boast blue and gold graphical upgrades, with Gwen casting gold-tinted abilities, Annie hurling blue-gold fire, and Fiora’s markers appears as blue and purple. Miss Fortune’s Q, E, and R abilities both appear very crystalline. Each of the four splash arts (pictured above in the gallery) carry a similar style, with the four League champions’ new outfits each adorned with regal golds, bronzes, and blues.
For those wanting to get their hands on these cosmetics (and who wouldn’t), the new Battle Queen skins will go live in League Patch 14.17 on Wednesday, Aug. 28.
Alongside these four Battle Queen skins, Darius and Garen will both be receiving new God King chromas. Darius will get a “Divine God King” rebranding while Garen goes in the other direction with the anthesis, a “Fallen God King” aesthetic.
All the new League skins are themed around an alternate Runeterra universe the Riot Games developers haven’t really touched since establishing it in 2020: The Battle Queens storyline, which revolves around a battle royale.
The Battle Queens world, which the lore suggests was “once fractured by endless warfare,” is designed around the Grand Coronation battle royale, where the champions who reign as queens do battle. This huge all-in conflict then fuels the magic holding the alternate world together; peace then ensues from the controlled warfare.
In patches past, champions like Diana, Janna, Katarina, Rell, and Qiyana were bestowed Battle Queen cosmetics. There was also a 2020 Battle Queens event that celebrated the original skins and brought back Nexus Blitz for a limited-edition run.
Interestingly, Riot theme work seems to suggest these new 2024 skins have been in production since the event ran five years ago. Why they were delayed is unclear.
