Nintendo is back again with another Nintendo Direct. However, don’t expect the gaming giant to address the obvious elephant in the room.
Today, Nintendo announced that their next presentation is scheduled for Aug. 27 at 9am CT. This presentation will consist of two different shows: a partner showcase featuring upcoming Nintendo Switch games coming from third-party developers, and an Indie World showcase showing off upcoming games from smaller studios and independent developers. Both of these shows are airing back to back, and are scheduled to run for roughly 40 minutes. Nintendo Directs are always a big deal for Switch owners, and now we are getting two for the price of one all in one morning.
However, knowing how eager Nintendo fans (and the broader gaming world) are about what the future holds for the aging handheld, Nintendo added another tweet, noting neither of these presentations will have any news about the Nintendo Switch’s successor. A disappointment for many, but it was to be expected. Nintendo has been very secretive about its plans for the Nintendo Switch 2, and saving anything big in a Direct focusing on indie and third-party games does seem unlikely. As of right now, we just have to wait a little longer, at least until the end of the current fiscal year.
Until then, gamers can only wonder what new games will be shown in tomorrow’s showcase. Many in the comments from Nintendo’s posts are already speculating, throwing out every possible scenario realistic or otherwise. A number of commenters are hoping to finally get a release date for Hollow Knight: Silksong, the highly anticipated sequel to the 2017 Metroidvania that has been in development for years and suffered from a handful of delays and changing release windows. Having to wait even longer for both a new Switch and a new Hollow Knight might just be too much for some to handle.
