Smite 2 players are furious with expensive skins and ‘pointless’ Legacy Gems

Smite 2 has been out for a day, and the community is already up in arms over the state of the MOBA’s optional skins and Legacy Gems system designed to reward long-time fans for their commitment to the series.

Following its contemporaries, Smite 2 features an array of pretty but pricey cosmetics that ask a lot of your wallets and purses. The OG Smite was a huge success, and its popularity has caused developer Titan Forge Games to go heavy on microtransaction prices—along with the already well-priced Founder’s Bundles available—leading to an unhappy reaction from players.

“Anyone thinks that the skin prices are a bit much?” a thread in the Smite 2 subreddit asked, and the overall reaction is agreement that skin prices are over the top.

“The whole point of Legacy Gems is that they’re supposed to be a discount, yet everything’s unaffordable even with Legacy Gems, so they’re currently kinda pointless,” user Right_Entertainer324 said. SneakiestCris added, “I think $20 for a skin is a bit much. I could justify a skin costing $10 but as it is right now I don’t think it’s really worth buying the skin.”

Linking a Smite and Smite 2 account to claim Legacy Gems is tricky enough, but the fact Legacy Gems—a reward for returning players from the first Smite—only give you full discounts on Smite skins and a slight reduction on Smite 2 skins hasn’t gone down well.

Veterans believe they aren’t being rewarded enough for their time investment: “I feel like my 125k Legacy Gems are just pointless to be fair. Should be able to buy more than just old skins with them,” VantexHD said.

Smite 2’s Steam rating is also suffering. As of Aug. 28, the MOBA has a “Mixed” review rating, with most of the negativity being attributed to Smite 2‘s MTX and ineffectual Legacy Gems.

“I have 6.5k hrs on Smite and spent around $6000 on the game. The fact I have to use Legacy Gems and Diamonds when I have 580,000 Legacy Gems is a ripoff and HiRez knows it,” Steam user Gorrvaskr said. Another reviewer (Calvery) went as far as to say, “The Mini Battle Pass Mechanic on every God is completely ridiculous and predatory.”

As Smite 2 is only in its alpha phase for now, there’s plenty of time to improve. The initial reaction isn’t great, so it remains to be seen if the developer makes changes to win over the Smite 2 fanbase.
