There is never a quiet day for League of Legends players. This time, the player base on Reddit voiced their frustration over the new milestones system, with some players believing Riot wants to “reward players less.”
The quest for Mastery Chests took a sour turn today as players made their feelings on the new milestone system abundantly clear. This system requires specific tasks to be completed in order to earn a tick on the milestone counter. The latest League of Legends champion mastery system has been in effect since May 15, the beginning of split two. However, only now have players had enough of the new milestone system, citing difficulty in obtaining Mastery Chests and Hextech Keys.
In the new milestone system, players are assigned 10 champions to play for their seasonal milestone progress in each split. Each champion has four mastery tiers, and within those tiers, Mastery Chests can be unlocked. To unlock them, you need to play the champion and earn the grade required to complete the milestone. An example is Ashe Mastery 1, where you need to earn a grade of A or higher in one match and a grade of C or higher in four other matches.
Although Riot claimed in their dev update that the goal of the new system was to increase the average number of chests a player can earn per year, this has had the opposite effect for some. “Currently my loot tab is 9 keys and 0 chests,” said the author of the original Reddit post. The player feels they are now forced to play champions they don’t like to receive a Mastery Chest.
Another player in the thread claimed they believed Riot’s intentions are to reward players with fewer chests so they will purchase more via the store. “They want to reward players less and entice them to buy more chests/keys/skins,” they wrote.
It will be interesting to see if Riot changes the system, with many in the Reddit thread claiming the changes have not helped those who play other modes, such as ARAM and Arena.
