Who won the EA FC 24 Esports World Cup?

The EA FC 24 Esports World Cup, alongside last month’s FC Pro 24 World Championship, was the pinnacle of the EA FC 24 esports season. After four days of spectacular goals, brilliant tackles, and incredible drama, the winner of the EA FC 24 Esports World Cup has been crowned.

The champion of the EA FC 24 Esports World Cup is João “jafonso” Vasconcelos, who represented Luna Galaxy at the tournament. The Portuguese player defeated Gabriel “Young” Freitas of Tuzzy E-Sports in the grand final in comfortable fashion, but the story could’ve been very different if not for the unlikeliest of turnarounds earlier in the bracket.

Young was the only player to defeat Jafonso at the EA FC 24 Esports World Cup going into the final, but that circumstance didn’t affect the Portuguese in the least. The score was 2-0 within 10 minutes of play, and Jafonso never truly allowed his opponent to threaten his crown. The final score of 6-2 accurately represents the sheer dominance on display, which was par for the course with Jafonso all week long.

Jafonso’s victory run secured him a $300,000 cut from the $1 million total prize pool. His final opponent, Young, was awarded half that amount for his efforts. Besides that single loss to Young in the group stage, the European player had been ruthlessly dispatching his opponents, up until the semi-final stage, where we saw by far the best game of the entire event and a true display of grit and determination by the eventual champion.

The clash between Jafonso and another Brazilian, Paulo “PHzin” Chaves, went all the way to the wire—not once, but twice. A silly foul in the penalty area with less than five minutes on the clock looked like it would seal Jafonso’s fate, but he responded with a brilliantly calm offensive execution in stoppage time to equalize and send the game into extra time. There, he’d score with the last kick of the match once more to win 7-6 and proceed to meet Young in the final.

The goal fest between Jafonso and PHzin was the standout in a rather dull playoff bracket at the EA FC 24 Esports World Cup. Every other game from the quarter-finals on was won by at least four goals, mostly taking out the dramatic element usually present at EA FC esports events.
