Fallout London devs to build new indie studio after mod’s mega success

Team FOLON, the group of volunteer modders responsible for the hugely popular Fallout London mod, intends to form a brand-new indie studio following the project’s roaring success.

While fixes and a substantial content patch are underway for the total conversion mod, the dev team is headed for something bigger. Speaking to BBC News on Aug. 10, FOLON’s Dean “Prilladog” Carter chalked out future plans following the mainstream limelight on its ambitious Fallout 4 mod. “A lot of people who have enjoyed [Fallout London] have donated to us and what we are doing with that is we are channeling that into Team FOLON,” Carter said.

The new venture will allow them to come up with their original ideas and create their own game, Carter explained, as well as free them from potentially clumsy scenarios where their project could be affected by another company.

Notably, Fallout London’s initial release on St. George’s Day had to be pushed back, courtesy of the Fallout 4 Next Gen update. While game companies aren’t legally obligated to communicate with modders, we’ve seen collaboration precedents between the two in the likes of Stardew Valley and Paradox grand strategy titles.

There’s little doubt over the sheer talent of the team which already had a few of its members hired by Bethesda during the mod’s development period. Although building a new game from the ground up would be new territory, Carter believes they have most of the groundwork already taken care of. “Fallout London has been a great springboard for [this] because we’ve worked with people now, we know what the community seems to like, and we’ve got this great platform where we can talk to [the community],” Carter noted, alluding to the Team FOLON Discord server that’s quickly approaching 100,000 members.

While a new game is a long way off, you can expect regular bugfixes and stability updates for Fallout London to roll out and a “bigger” patch adding another ending—titled “Wild Card”—to round up the expansive total conversion mod this year.
