Navigating across The Classrooms seems like a walk in the park until you remember you’re not alone. Monsters dwell across each backrooms level; completely starved of entertainment, looking for someone to clip out of bounds, and fall into their lap.
Here are all The Classrooms monsters and what you need to do to survive each encounter.
The Classrooms: All monsters and how to beat them
There are 10 story mode and two further custom mode monsters in The Classrooms. Each have distinct behavioral patterns you’re going to need to learn and then adapt to, if you want a fighting chance inside the limitless backrooms.
Cursed Doll
Level: The Classrooms
The Cursed Doll can’t move if you’re looking at it. This mechanic is used in Lethal Company, Resident Evil VIII: Shadows of Rose DLC, and most famously seen in Doctor Who‘s Blink.
While you can continuously freeze the Cursed Doll’s movement by looking at it, you can extend this frozen state by trapping it behind a door. This won’t last forever, but it does offer a breather from watching the Cursed Doll while juggling the Cloaked Figure and Smiley.
Army of Dolls
Level: Custom Mode
The Army of Dolls are the same as the Cursed Doll, except there’s now four of them. The Dolls move together and are often seen in a straight line. They can only flank you if you happen to be trapped in a corridor with multiple exits. Because of that, it’s best to keep track of their collective movement at all times so they can’t split up.
Hell Doll
Level: Custom Mode
The Hell Doll works the same as the Cursed Doll. This fiery variation of the Cursed Doll follows you around when you’re not looking. Watch its movement and keep a safe distance.
Cloaked Figure
Level: The Classrooms
Look out any red corridors or flashing lights; this indicates the Cloaked Figure’s in the vicinity. The monster spawns in the area if you stay too long. The only way to avoid this is to keep the lights off, but this entices the Cloaked Figure’s companion, Smiley. The Classrooms corridors remain lit, so move through these areas quickly and avoid entering a corridor where flickering lights are present. You can outrun the Cloaked Figure if he appears, but a dead end will get you killed.
Screecho the Clown
Level: The Library and The Playrooms
Screecho the Clown is the hardest anomaly to evade in The Classrooms. He’s completely blind but has the hearing of a bat. As the mic listens to your gasps and screams at all times, you must refrain from speaking and navigate across the Library crouched.
Use Egg Timers and Phonographs to distract Screecho and avoid following him, as he will often turn around to continue his patrol path. Finally, evade any whoopie cushions and balloons, as these will alert Screecho to your location.
Gangler
Level: The Bathrooms
Gangler is the sole anomaly of the Bathrooms. This is the easiest monster to understand as they can see, hear, and smell you. We don’t recommend stealth for either level as the Gangler will often search for you when you complete a task-related action. Remember the layout of levels so you aren’t scrambling for the exit when your tasks are completed.
The best way to avoid the Gangler is to hide within stalls or around corners, refrain from making sound, and listen out to its heavy footsteps. The Gangler will roar when they’re chasing after you. Run and stay tightly to walls so you can cut corners with ease, and create a larger gap between yourself and Gangler. Finally, hide inside stalls so the monster loses track of you. They can break down stall doors, however, so keep that in mind before you hide in front of their line of sight.
Mangler
Level: The Poolrooms
Mangler is the red variation of Gangler. They behave the same, so outrun them if you’re spotted and hide to avoid being seen. Neither Mangler nor Gangler can climb, so use this to your advantage if the level includes structures for you to climb up (e.g., staircases).
Smiley
Level: The Classrooms, The Bathrooms, and The Playrooms
Smiley is the creepiest Classrooms monster. He can randomly appear in the darkness, consuming all light in the area. Listen out for the loud “fear sound” that plays when he is in the area. There’s no distinct features or cues when he’s moving around, aside from his intense wide grin that follows you across the backrooms.
The best way to keep Smiley at bay is to always have Batteries on you. This ensures your Flashlight always works. Smiley cannot harm you if the area’s lit. Keep in mind turning on a light doesn’t remove Smiley. He will still follow you until your Flashlight runs out. Find unexplored rooms where lighting is available and search for Batteries to replenish your Flashlight.
Whispering Wyrm
Level: The Poolrooms
The Whispering Wyrm is the scariest anomaly of the backrooms, with its human face and snake-like body. Only capable of seeing movement, you should evade it only when the Whispering Wyrm’s back is turned. You can accidently get a game over if you touch its tail. Stand perfectly still when the Wyrm is facing your direction. Listen out to its whispers, but don’t run unless it sees you. When evading the Wyrm, it’s best to cut around corner when possible, and avoid running in a straight line as this monster’s faster than you.

Level: The Poolrooms
These are harmless anomalies with the sole intention to jumpscare you.
The Tenant
Level: The Playrooms
The Tenant has similar behavior to Gangler and Mangler, but this anomaly is blind. Unlike its accomplice, Necropede, The Tenant cannot climb on top of structures. So, use this to your advantage and manoeuvre around the Playrooms using the trampolines and rooftops.
The Tenant can only hear and smell you, so make sure you’re stocked up on Deodorant and avoid running through tight corridors. Leeches can fall from his body. If caught by these, you will quickly start to smell, leading The Tenant straight to you.
Necropede
Level: The Playrooms
The Necropede cannot see or hear, but she can sense you by smell. Make sure you use Deodorant if “you’re smelly” appears on screen. The chances of your character smelling mid-level is increased if you run around too much, or jump from a great height.
Avoid bursting any gas balloons as this will entice the Necropede to your location. Make sure you are always on the move, but avoid sprinting if you’ve run out of Deodorant. The Necropede can climb walls and appear on The Playrooms’ rooftops.
