League of Legends caters to both new and returning players with customization options. One major feature is unlocking or locking your camera. One option is perfect for new players, while the other is usually chosen by the more experienced Summoners.
Both options come along with different benefits. Locking your camera allows you not to worry about navigating it during fights and so on, which is perfect for players who are just starting their journey with League. Those on the experienced side usually prefer to have it unlocked to have the better overview of the battlefield. Here’s how you can do it to see for yourself.
How to lock and unlock the camera in League of Legends
There are two ways of locking and unlock your camera in League of Legends. The simplest one is to toggle the locked camera off with the button found in-game. You can locate it on the left-hand side of the minimap as a small camera icon. Press it and you will unlock or lock your camera.
Another easy way to achieve the same results is to use the keyboard hotkey that will toggle the camera locking. By default, this is set to the letter Y, but you can customize what key triggers this feature in the control settings. Simply head to options, and then hotkeys, which is where you’ll find one for locking your camera, where you will be able to change the key bound to it.
Camera Lock Mode: which option should you choose?
There isn’t a perfect answer to this question. It depends on how comfortable you are with the game’s mechanics and so on. If you’re still on the newbie side, locking it is fine, since it will allow you to focus on learning other things, like collecting minions, learning your champions and so on. However, if you already know a thing or two about League, we suggest not using the camera lock once you feel comfortable with the controls.
Having the camera unlocked allows the player to quickly look around the map and hone in on crucial situations outside their vicinity.
However, there are times when playing locked screen can cause issues, namely when an enemy champion is lying in wait offscreen or teammates are attempting to bring something to the player’s attention on the map. This, however, can easily be fixed. Even with the camera locked, players can click on the minimap to see a position or use the hotkeys to focus the camera on their allies.
Once you have the basics and are comfortable with League, you may want to use free cam to take your gameplay to the next level. Although this will more than likely seem tricky at first, it’s worth it in the long shot, especially if you’re trying to climb the ranked ladder.
What to do if your Camera Lock Mode is bugged
There is an issue that players commonly face where the game will be stuck in either locked or accessible camera mode and will not respond to any of the methods listed above. If this bug occurs, you can get away with fixing it by pressing on the minimap and dragging your cursor around the map.
Sometimes, this is all it takes, but in other cases, players have been forced to restart their client or, in the most severe cases, reinstalling the game entirely.
