Off the Grid release date and early access, explained

Initially slated for a 2023 release on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S, Off the Grid is finally making significant progress as Gunzilla Games launches an early access version for players to check out.

Below is everything you need to know about early access, when exactly the full release can be expected, and insight into some key gameplay elements.

When is Off the Grid early access?

Off the Grid early access is available to download now from the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S stores, while the PC version is available through the Epic Games store. It is not playable on PS4 and Xbox One.

As part of the early access version, players can dive into 60-player battle royale matches in teams of up to three with one main objective: be the last squad standing on Teardrop Island.

Given that Off the Grid remains in the early access phase, certain bugs, glitches, and performance-related issues are to be expected.

When will Off the Grid be fully released?

According to the game’s official website, Off the Grid is set for full release this year. However, as of Oct. 9, Gunzilla Games has not confirmed or published a final release date.

That said, the release of early access all but confirms that everything is still on track for the game to fully launch sooner rather than later.

Will Off the Grid be delayed again?

There’s no evidence to suggest Off the Grid will be pushed back again, but as is the case with any game still in development or early access, studios and developers may decide to further delay the full release based on performance and community feedback.

This is where early access will play an important role. If the gameplay performs well and feedback is positive, you would think Gunzilla Games will have fewer adjustments to make before going ahead with the full release. On the other hand, if certain gameplay aspects feel off and community feedback is negative, we will often see developers halt proceedings to improve the overall experience.

Off the Grid’s key gameplay elements

Off the Grid is built around three core gameplay features: the Teardrop island map, cyberlimbs, and weapons. The developers plan to release 11 areas on the main map, 36 cyberlimbs, and over 300 weapon and parts combinations.

In Off the Grid, as with any battle royale game, your primary objective is to be the last player or squad standing at the end of the match. In this case, it is a 150-player match at full release. You’ll rely on your arsenal of guns and the enhancements provided by cyberlimbs to survive and take down your opponents, following the typical gameplay loop of battle royale games.

The unique part about Off the Grid is that it will feature a PvE mode, in which you’ll play through a 60-hour narrative campaign while the battle royale madness unfolds around you.

Cyberlimbs will act like buffs to your character. For example, you can equip the Roadrunners mechanical legs to run faster or the Slugger arms to slow down your targets with gooey slime. This feature essentially lets you build your character according to your preferred playstyle.

Finally, you can customize weapons across five categories: sight, muzzle, tactical, under barrel, and magazine. You can create and save your loadouts before dropping into Teardrop Island. This feature ensures that Off the Grid matches start off dynamically, eliminating the need for you to scramble for the first available gun for protection at the beginning of the game.
